Everything You Need to Learn About Solar Panels

Due to increased electricity city bills in Pakistan, people are moving towards solar energy. A primary reason for the shift toward solar panels is Pakistan’s reduction of solar prices. Solar prices will reduce constantly for January 2024. The leading cause of rising prices is the Tax government of Pakistan, which decided to remove all the taxes on solar imports. By eliminating these taxes, people see more than a 60% reduction in solar panel prices from the previous year. The removal of sales tax, which is 17%, is also a significant factor in price reduction. With these tax reliefs, solar panels have become affordable in Pakistan.

We are here to provide an updated solar panel price in Pakistan for different brands, which will help you to make better decisions before buying. For now, prices range from Rs 35 per watt to Rs 50 per watt, depending on the quality of the solar panel. This article will provide a complete guide and detailed updates on prices.

I’m also sharing my experience with solar panels and why I installed a solar panel at my home. Before getting into all the details of my setup, it’s essential to hit on one crucial Point: there’s no one-size-fits-all answer to getting solar. It would help to lay out your goals before entering the solar panel.

Why I installed solar panels at my home

  • Environmental: Going all electric and removing fossil fuels from our electricity sources. We want to know where our power is coming from.
  • Security: Gaining energy independence for situations like storm blackouts because power outages in Pakistan during storms are expected.
  • Financial: We can save money on our utility bills and stabilize ongoing costs for our home.

How Solar Panels Produce Electricity

Solar cells have many layers, but we will clear the basic concepts to understand them easily. Silicon is extracted from the sand to make solar cells, which is the main element of solar cells. Silicon is 2nd most common material on earth because it is cheap, and its supply never ends.

The atoms of this pure silicon are firmly attached, so its electrons cannot move quickly to achieve electron mobility in silicon wafers. Two more materials are being used: Boron and Phosphorus. The last shell of a Silicon atom has 4 electrons; Boron has three, and Phosphorus has 5. This means that Phosphorus has more than 1 electron than silicon, and Boron has less than 1 electron.

To make a solar cell, Boron or Phosphorus is added to silicon. A negative type or N-type layer is formed by adding Phosphorus, and a positive or P-type layer is formed from Boron. To generate electricity from a solar cell, a thick base layer has to be negative or positive, and there will be an emitter layer on top of it, which will be of the opposite charge from the base layer. Now, when the sun sets on this solar cell, the electrons will move from one layer to another layer with the photon energy of the sun, and we will get electricity from the movement of these electrons.

Types of Solar Panels

Solar energy is a reliable and long-lasting energy source and is very cost-effective. Many types of solar panels are available on the market and perfectly match the environment. The solar panel is a great way to reduce your carbon footprint and save money on energy bills.

Here are the different types of Solar Panels

Monocrystalline Solar Panels:

Monocrystalline solar panels are the best type of solar panels. It is made up of monocrystalline silicon. The ability to capture sunlight is very high compared to polycrystalline solar panels, and thin film solar panels also have high power output and occupy less space, which is why they have the highest efficiency rate and high lifetime value.

Polycrystalline Solar Panels:

Polycrystalline solar panels are made by melting raw silicon, have lower efficiency and shorter life spans, and are affected by high temperatures. The difference between monocrystalline and polycrystalline solar panels is insignificant; it strongly depends on the situation because power outputs are the same.

 N-Type vs P-Type Solar Panels

The primary difference between the P-type and N-type panels is.

  • The P-type has a base layer of boron and an upper layer of phosphorus.
  • The N-type has a base layer of phosphorus and an upper layer of boron.

Why N-type is better than P-type

In Pakistan, summer is more extended than winter, so the N-type panels have low-temperature coefficients. In simple words, they will perform better in summer than P-type panels.

The second main reason for this is Light-induced degradation (LID). In n-type, light-induced degradation is zero. The advantage of this is that you get more life from the Solar panel. Because of this, you will get 30 30-year performance warranty on N-type panels compared to P-type panels.

Light-induced Degradation (LID) In solar panels

The mixture of boron and oxygen has a lot of degradation. It is called light-induced degradation in solar panels. In P-type panels, the solar panel produces energy as soon as it produces energy. The light-induced degradation occurs when exposed to the environment for the first few hours or days. If you look at the solar panel’s efficiency graph, you will see that it drops significantly in the first year, with about 1-2% efficiency losses.

A Complete Installation Guide about Solar Panels

When you choose to install solar panels, your investment will pay off over time because it can save you money, but they are also expensive to install, so it must be necessary to take care while installing. Factors That Affect the Cost of Solar Panels

Many factors affect the cost of Solar Panels. Solar Panels have gained so much popularity as a sustainable and cost-effective source of energy. In Pakistan, the demand for Solar panels increases day by day, so it is very important to understand the factors that affect the cost of Solar Panels.

Here, we will discuss different factors that affect the cost of Solar Panels:

  • Type and Quality of Solar Panels: The type and quality of Solar Panels are very important factors that affect Solar Panel prices in Pakistan. The type of panel, whether it is monocrystalline, polycrystalline, or thin-film, greatly affects the cost of Solar Panels. High-quality Solar panels have longer lifespans and are more efficient than low-quality Solar Panels.
  • Type of Installation of Solar Panels: There are many different types of installations of Solar Panels. Installation costs play a significant role in affecting the price of solar panels in Pakistan. The overall installation costs of a solar panel system increase if additional equipment, such as inverters or batteries, are used in the system. The cost of installation depends upon the complexity of the installation, as well as the location and labor costs.
  • Capacity and Size of Solar Panels: The size and capacity of solar panels also play a significant role in their cost. Larger solar panels are very high in cost, but they have higher voltage and generate more power. Larger solar panels having more capacity are more expensive than lower-capacity solar panels. The capacity of the solar panels determines the amount of electricity that can be generated and is measured in kilowatts (kW).

Famous Solar Panel Brands In Pakistan

In Pakistan, several brands sell solar panels, but in this article, I will discuss some famous brands.

Longi Solar Panels

Longi Solar Manufacturers are one of the biggest solar manufacturers in the world right now. The long panels have a higher percentage of converting sunlight into electricity, and we will also see a higher temperature coefficient. The other main reason for making Longi more popular in Pakistan is its build quality and the material they use, according to the brutal weather in Pakistan.

Longi panels are available in two varieties: Single-glass solar panels and Double-glass solar panels. Furthermore, both A-grade and B-grade solar panels are available in the market.

What is Longi Solar Hi MO 6?

There is a lot of discussion in the market about long himo 6 and 7 solar panels. I will simply explain these panels and why you should buy them. Actually, the himo (high-efficiency mono crystalline)work on mono crystalline himo five was launched in 2019 and is based on perk technology.

Then, after 2021, Longi decided to build panels for two separate markets. Himo 7 is for power plants, and Himo 6 is for distribution generation, such as in homes, factories, etc.

The point is that Himo 6 and Hime 7 are not two different technologies but two models designed for other markets.

Jinko Solar Panels

Jinko Solar Panel is one of the world’s most renowned solar panel manufacturers. Jinko now serves more than 180 countries. Jinko Solar owns 14 globalized manufacturing plants. Jinko Solar is fully committed to providing its customers with high-quality solar panels. Jinko claims that they will provide  210GW+  in Q3 2023, which is a great step toward green energy.

Jinko is the direct competitor of Longi solar panels in Pakistan. Jinko panel prices start from 38 to 45. The market experiences fluctuations in prices from time to time.

Canadian Solar Panels

Canadian Solar panels are becoming more popular in Pakistan than Longi Himo 6. Canadian solar panels use almost all advanced technologies, such as N-type and bifacial. Bifacial solar panels generate 5 to 10% more energy because they can generate power from both sides of the panel. That is why Canadian solar panels are becoming more popular in the Pakistani market.

Canadian solar panel prices start from 38 to 45. The market experiences minor fluctuations in prices from time to time.

JA Solar Panels

JA Solar is also getting popular in the Pakistani market due to its PERC ( Passivated Emitter Rear Contact) Technology. This feature improves the overall working of solar panels. Ja solar panels are available in more than 130 countries. The prices of this solar panel vary from 45 to 55 in the market nowadays.

Trina Solar Panels Price In Pakistan

Trina Solar is also the biggest name in solar manufacturing, and these panels are also available in Pakistan. Trina is not a new name. They have been in the solar industry since 1997, and their main aim is to reduce waste and population by providing you with a better solution for green energy. Trina uses the latest technology in their panels. They are n-type as well as bifocal. Trina solar panel prices start from 38 to 40 per watt.

Other Benefits of Solar Panels

  •  Environmental Impact of Solar Panels: Solar panels are eco-friendly and have the least negative impact on the environment. It does not produce greenhouse gasses, reduces carbon emissions, and does not pollute the water. It helps to combat climate change and does not produce any noise which is a major benefit during solar energy production.
  • Energy Independence: Solar panels provide a reliable source of energy. Generating your electricity means you will be using less from the utility supplier, which immediately saves your energy bill. The unused electricity from solar panels that you have generated back to the grid can also be sold to others and make money, which is a green investment that is more beneficial.
  • Improves Grid Security: The grid is less prone to blackouts if multiple power plants are spread out. A grid with high solar energy penetration has thousands of energy production centres that are widely spread out. This increases grid security in case of an overload or natural or man-made disaster.
  • Cost Savings: By installing solar panels, homeowners, businesses, and companies can reduce their electricity bills and achieve long-term financial savings. Solar panels save money depending on various factors, including the size of your panel system, your location, and current energy usage.
  • Increased Property Value: Research shows that homes with solar panels have increased property value. Homes with solar panels sell 20 % faster than those without solar panels. The demand for solar panels is growing; now, more homeowners and business owners are aware of the importance of installing solar panels with more profits. Therefore, over the next few years, there may be an increase in demand for solar panels.

A  Brief  History Of Solar Panels

In 1839, the French scientist Edmond Becquerel unveiled the phenomenon known as the Photovoltaic effect. His discovery would allow the conversion of sunlight to solar electric energy. Becquerel observed that when an electron reaches an excited state within a conduction band and moves freely, it generates an electric current. His discovery was not acknowledged at that time, and his discovery then led to the invention in 1833 by Charles Fritts, who made another significant contribution by inventing the First Solar Panel, which was formed by a thin layer of selenium coated with an even thin layer of gold. From this humble beginning, a device known as today’s Solar Panel would arise.

Conclusion

For the last three months, there has been a massive decline in solar panel prices in Pakistan because the government’s removal of taxes on solar imports has spurred significant interest in solar installation. The reduction is more than 60% and more than 4 to 5 % expected in the next three months. Other than that the prices of electricity are increasing day by day. I will also try to guide you on some technical terms of solar technologies like N-type, P-type, and LID (light-induced degradation). Also, discuss some of the popular brands in Pakistan.

Frequently Asked Questions

Yes, due to the massive decrease in solar panel prices in Pakistan and, on the other hand, an enormous increase in electricity bills, solar panels are worth it, and your complete investment returns within a year or two.

The point to understand here is that n-type and p-type are not specific technologies but rather distributions of layers of boron and phosphorus. In Pakistan, during the summer, temperatures can get very high. Therefore, the light-induced degradation in n-type is negligible, so it performs well.

Yes technically, they work, but they do not produce electricity at night.
